Quantum computing

26 stories in the last 90 days

In short

This topic follows quantum computing, from hardware and cloud access to early applications, and the related move to post-quantum cryptography. Most buyers have no production need for quantum computers yet, but they do need a plan to replace encryption that future quantum machines could break, starting with an inventory of where cryptography is used.

Claude vs. ChatGPT: Which is best? [2026]

When OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022, tech writers (myself included) became obsessed with testing its limits. Could it write poetry? Debug code? Explain quantum physics to a five-year-old? Once Anthropic's Claude entered the scene a few months later, the focus shifted to head-to-head task comparisons (like counting objects or navigating ethical dilemmas) to try to figure out which model was…

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should we be buying quantum computing now?

For most organisations, no. Practical uses are still emerging and cloud access is the usual way to experiment. Research teams in areas such as chemistry, materials and optimisation are the typical early users.

What is post-quantum cryptography?

Encryption and signature algorithms designed to resist attacks by large quantum computers. Standards bodies have published standardised algorithms, and vendors are adding support to their products.

Why act before large quantum computers exist?

Data stolen today could be decrypted later, and replacing cryptography across many systems takes years. An inventory of the algorithms in use and vendors’ migration plans are sensible first steps.
