Platform engineering
Definition
Platform engineering is the discipline of building and running an internal platform that gives development teams self-service tools and paved paths for building, deploying and operating software.
Why it matters when you’re buying
A good platform cuts the setup work every team would otherwise repeat and makes security and compliance the default. Run the platform as a product with users, and measure adoption rather than mandating it.
How it relates to other terms
The developer portal is the platform’s front door, infrastructure as code is much of what sits behind it, and DORA metrics show whether it is helping.
