Glossary
Internal developer portal
Also called Developer portal, IDP.
Definition
An internal developer portal is a single interface where engineers find services, owners, documentation and templates, and start common tasks such as creating a new service.
Why it matters when you’re buying
It is often the visible front of a platform engineering programme. Its value depends on accurate, automatically updated catalogue data; a portal people stop trusting quickly goes unused. The abbreviation IDP is also used for the internal developer platform behind it.
How it relates to other terms
The portal is the interface; platform engineering is the team and practice that builds what it exposes.
