Object storage
Definition
Object storage keeps data as objects with metadata in a flat namespace, reached over web APIs, and scales to very large volumes at low cost.
Why it matters when you’re buying
It is the default home for backups, data lakes, media and AI training data. Compare durability, retrieval and egress charges, support for immutability, and compatibility with the object storage APIs your tools already expect.
How it relates to other terms
Lakehouses and immutable backups are both built on object storage, and egress fees often decide what it really costs.
