Data lakehouse

Also called Lakehouse.

Definition

A data lakehouse is an architecture that stores data in open formats on low-cost object storage while adding the table management, transactions and performance of a data warehouse.

Why it matters when you’re buying

It lets one copy of data serve BI, data science and AI through more than one query engine, which means less copying and less lock-in. Check which table formats and catalogues a platform supports and whether other engines can read and write the same tables.

How it relates to other terms

A lakehouse keeps data in an open table format on object storage, aiming to offer what a data warehouse does without a proprietary storage layer.
