Immutable backup
Definition
An immutable backup is a copy of data that can’t be changed or deleted for a set retention period, even by an administrator.
Why it matters when you’re buying
Attackers often go after backups before encrypting production, so immutability is a basic requirement for ransomware recovery. Check that retention locks can’t be shortened through the management console or a support request.
How it relates to other terms
Immutable copies often live on object storage and inside an isolated recovery environment, and they are only useful if they meet your RPO and RTO.
