Backup and recovery

75 stories in the last 90 days · 2 community threads

In short

Backup and recovery covers protecting copies of data and systems and restoring them after deletion, failure, disaster or a cyber attack. Buyers increasingly judge products on recovery from ransomware: immutable copies, isolation from production credentials, clean restore testing and how quickly whole environments, not just files, can come back.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are RPO and RTO?

Recovery point objective is how much data you can afford to lose, measured as time since the last good copy. Recovery time objective is how long you can afford to be down. Set both per system with the business.

What is an immutable backup?

A backup that can’t be changed or deleted for a set period, even by an administrator, so an attacker with stolen credentials can’t destroy it.

How should we test restores?

Regularly, and for whole systems rather than single files. A common pattern is routine automated restore checks plus a full recovery exercise for critical systems, including identity and network services, at least once a year.
