Data streaming

33 stories in the last 90 days

In short

Data streaming means moving and processing events continuously as they happen, rather than in periodic batches, using event logs and stream processing engines. It suits fraud detection, operational dashboards and feeding AI systems with fresh data, and buyers weigh operating effort, cost at sustained throughput and how well a platform connects to their databases and analytics.

Scooping OCI Artifacts: Navigating Registries, Routing, and Pushing Responsibility Out (Part 2)

TL;DR: We tend to view registries as all-powerful servers that govern naming, routing, and delivery. In reality, the architecture pushes nearly all addressing and routing responsibility out of the OCI specification and into other layers: client policies dictate transport security, registries use HTTP 307 redirects to delegate byte streaming to cloud storage, and alternative network layers […]

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When do we need streaming rather than batch?

When data loses value quickly: detecting fraud, reacting to sensor readings or keeping a customer view current. If hourly or daily freshness is fine, batch is usually simpler and cheaper.

What is change data capture?

A way of reading every insert, update and delete from a database’s log and publishing them as events, so other systems stay in step without heavy queries on the source.

Managed service or run it ourselves?

Streaming platforms take real effort to run at scale: capacity planning, upgrades and recovery. Managed services remove most of that for a higher unit price. Running your own makes sense with steady, large volumes and a team that knows the platform.
