Change data capture (CDC)
Also called CDC.
Definition
Change data capture is a technique that reads inserts, updates and deletes from a database’s transaction log and passes them on as events to other systems.
Why it matters when you’re buying
CDC keeps analytics platforms, caches and search indexes in step with operational databases without heavy queries on the source. Check which databases a tool supports, how it handles schema changes and what happens after an outage.
How it relates to other terms
CDC is a common source for event streaming platforms and a lighter alternative to bulk extracts in ETL.
