Event streaming
Also called Data streaming.
Definition
Event streaming is the continuous capture, storage and processing of events, such as transactions, clicks or sensor readings, as they happen, usually in an ordered, durable log.
Why it matters when you’re buying
It lets systems react in seconds instead of waiting for the next batch, and decouples the applications that produce data from those that use it. It also adds an always-on platform to run, so weigh managed services against running it yourself.
How it relates to other terms
Change data capture turns database changes into events for a stream, and streaming increasingly replaces or feeds batch ETL.
