Serverless computing
Also called Serverless, Functions as a service.
Definition
Serverless computing is a cloud model where the provider runs your code or service on demand and manages the servers underneath, charging for actual use rather than reserved capacity.
Why it matters when you’re buying
It removes capacity planning and suits spiky or event-driven work. At steady high volume, per-use pricing can cost more than reserved capacity, and the services around your code tend to be specific to one provider.
How it relates to other terms
Containers are the usual alternative for steady workloads, and FinOps practice helps compare the two on real usage.
