Serverless

16 stories in the last 90 days

In short

Serverless means running code or services without managing servers: the provider handles capacity and you pay for what runs rather than for idle machines. It suits spiky, event-driven work, and buyers should weigh cold-start latency, per-request pricing at steady high volume and how tied the code becomes to one provider.

AWS Transform announces Azure-to-AWS cloud-native code conversion

Today, AWS announced the general availability of application code conversion from Azure SDK to AWS SDK in AWS Transform, giving you an accelerated path to migrate Microsoft Azure cloud-native .NET applications to AWS. The AWS Transform .NET modernization agent identifies Azure service code and converts it to equivalent AWS service code. For example, an Azure Functions serverless function that…

Temporal Serverless Workers on Cloud Run: Scale workers ahead of demand

The open-source Temporal execution platform is rapidly becoming a foundational layer of modern software infrastructure, especially for orchestration in distributed systems and AI agent workloads. However, deploying and scaling workers in Temporal comes with unique challenges. Workers poll for tasks instead of serving requests, so request-driven serverless platforms can be an awkward fit. This…

AWS Lambda announces Lambda Web Functions

AWS Lambda announces Lambda Web Functions, a new serverless compute primitive where your code handles HTTP requests directly. Your code listens on a port and handles requests as it would on any HTTP server. You use frameworks you already know, such as Express or Hono, with no adapters or custom configuration. This enables you to serve workloads such as AI inference endpoints, server-side rendered…

AWS Secrets Manager adds managed external secrets support for Databricks and Twilio

AWS Secrets Manager now extends its managed external secrets capability to include Databricks and Twilio, enabling you to automatically rotate the credentials that your data pipelines and messaging applications use to call these services. You set up rotation directly from the AWS Management Console or API without writing or maintaining any custom rotation Lambda functions. Long-lived credentials…

Amazon Redshift now supports cross-Region queries for your data lake

Amazon Redshift now supports querying Amazon S3 data lake tables located in a different AWS Region. With enhanced VPC routing, data lake query traffic between Amazon S3 and Amazon Redshift stays within your own VPC. Both capabilities are powered by the integrated data lake query engine that runs directly on the compute of RG provisioned and Serverless clusters. These features are aimed at…

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is serverless cheaper than containers or virtual machines?

For workloads that sit idle much of the time, usually. For steady, high-volume workloads, paying per request can cost more than reserved capacity. Model your real traffic before deciding.

What is a cold start?

The delay when a function runs after being idle, while the platform prepares an environment for it. It matters for latency-sensitive requests, and most platforms offer ways to keep capacity warm for a fee.

Does serverless mean lock-in?

Function code is usually portable, but the triggers, permissions and managed services around it are specific to each provider. Keeping business logic apart from provider-specific glue lowers the cost of moving later.
