Glossary
Enterprise resource planning (ERP)
Also called ERP.
Definition
ERP software runs an organisation’s core business processes, such as finance, procurement, inventory and manufacturing, on a shared set of data.
Why it matters when you’re buying
ERP systems are among the largest and longest-lived technology investments, and moving between versions or vendors is a major programme. Weigh how much you customise, the vendor’s cloud roadmap and how easily you can get your data out.
How it relates to other terms
Low-code tools often extend an ERP without changing its core, and ITSM platforms handle the support around it.
