Glossary
Edge computing
Definition
Edge computing processes data close to where it is produced, such as in factories, shops, vehicles or telecom sites, rather than sending it all to a central cloud or data centre.
Why it matters when you’re buying
It cuts latency and bandwidth costs and keeps working when connections drop. The challenge is managing and securing many small, remote sites with few or no local staff.
How it relates to other terms
Industrial IoT is a common edge workload, small Kubernetes distributions often run edge applications, and SD-WAN connects the sites.
