Lakehouses and warehouses

In short

This topic covers data lakehouses and data warehouses. A lakehouse combines low-cost data lake storage with the table management and query performance of a warehouse, usually through open table formats, so one copy of data serves analytics, BI and AI. Buyers care about open formats and catalogues, query cost, governance and whether more than one engine can work on the same data.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Lakehouse or data warehouse?

A warehouse stores data in its own managed format and is often simplest for SQL analytics. A lakehouse keeps data in open formats on object storage so several engines can use it. Many organisations run both, and the line between them keeps blurring.

What is an open table format?

A specification for organising files on object storage as tables, with schemas, transactions and history, so different query engines can read and write the same data safely.

What drives lakehouse costs?

The compute used by queries and pipelines, storage volume, and how often data is rewritten or compacted. Sensible partitioning, clustering and automatic suspension of idle compute make a large difference.
