Observability and monitoring

In short

Observability is the ability to understand what a system is doing from the data it emits, mainly metrics, logs and traces, so teams can find the cause of problems nobody predicted. This topic also covers monitoring and APM. Buyers increasingly care about data volume and cost, support for OpenTelemetry and how easily they could take their telemetry to another tool.

Amazon GuardDuty adds optional threat detection rules for Runtime Monitoring

Amazon GuardDuty now supports optional detection rules for Runtime Monitoring. You can enable more than 50 Runtime Monitoring rules that help detect process, file, and network activity that might be routine in one environment but a sign of compromise in another, such as modifying sudoers files or disabling audit logging. The new rules provide detections for Amazon EC2 instances, Amazon EKS, and…

Comparing Coralogix with open source observability backends

We put the same OpenTelemetry data into four backends, Coralogix, ClickHouse, OpenSearch and a Loki, Tempo and Prometheus stack, then set an agent twelve questions against each one, from counting spans to working out what is wrong in a system it has never seen. Then we forced the agents to continue investigating until they got […] The post Comparing Coralogix with open source observability…

5-minute demo: DevSecOps with Red Hat OpenShift to speed up application delivery

If you're a platform engineer, you've likely lived this: your team has assembled a toolchain for CI/CD, monitoring, security scanning, GitOps, and networking. Each tool does its specific job well, but over time, you realize you’re spending more hours maintaining the integrations between those tools than helping developers ship code. That's the real cost of tool sprawl. Yes, it’s increased…

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between monitoring and observability?

Monitoring checks known conditions, such as whether a server is up or a threshold is crossed. Observability means being able to ask new questions of your data when something unexpected happens. In practice, tools do both.

Why do observability bills grow so quickly?

Costs usually follow data volume, and volume grows with every new service, container and log line. Sampling traces, dropping unused metrics, setting retention by data type and filtering data before it is stored all help.

Should we instrument with OpenTelemetry?

For most teams, yes. It is an open standard for collecting metrics, logs and traces, so you can send data to more than one backend and change vendors without re-instrumenting your code.

What are SLOs?

Service level objectives are reliability targets set from the user’s point of view, such as the share of requests that succeed quickly. They help teams decide when to slow releases and work on stability.
