In short

Kubernetes is the widely used open-source system for running containers across a cluster of machines, handling scheduling, scaling, networking and recovery. Buyers mostly choose between managed services and distributions rather than Kubernetes itself, so upgrades, security defaults, support and the cost of running many clusters are where the differences show.

Amazon GuardDuty adds optional threat detection rules for Runtime Monitoring

Amazon GuardDuty now supports optional detection rules for Runtime Monitoring. You can enable more than 50 Runtime Monitoring rules that help detect process, file, and network activity that might be routine in one environment but a sign of compromise in another, such as modifying sudoers files or disabling audit logging. The new rules provide detections for Amazon EC2 instances, Amazon EKS, and…

5-minute demo: DevSecOps with Red Hat OpenShift to speed up application delivery

If you're a platform engineer, you've likely lived this: your team has assembled a toolchain for CI/CD, monitoring, security scanning, GitOps, and networking. Each tool does its specific job well, but over time, you realize you’re spending more hours maintaining the integrations between those tools than helping developers ship code. That's the real cost of tool sprawl. Yes, it’s increased…

Announcing Wiz Runtime Sensor add-on for GKE: Turnkey threat detection for Kubernetes

Everything is moving faster in the age of AI, and that includes security threats. What used to take attackers weeks to exploit can now happen in just a few minutes. Standard vulnerability scans that run on artifacts at rest can catch basic setup issues, but to detect an attack that's actively happening you need real-time runtime protection. Today, we’re introducing the Wiz Runtime Sensor add-on…

Top 5 operators for Red Hat OpenShift

In the 1980s, the spreadsheet was considered such a valuable tool that would make buying a computer just to run it worthwhile. The term coined to describe such an application was a killer app. Is there an equivalent for Red Hat OpenShift? When it comes to tools that boost the value of the platform as a whole, we need to look at Red Hat OpenShift operators. There are generally speaking 2 types of…

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do we need Kubernetes?

Not for every workload. If you run a handful of services, a managed container service or a platform as a service may be simpler. Kubernetes pays off when you run many services, need the same platform across environments, or have a team to operate it.

Managed Kubernetes or a self-managed distribution?

Managed services take away the work of running the control plane and are the default in public cloud. Self-managed distributions suit on-premises, edge or regulated environments that need one platform everywhere. Either way you still own the workloads, add-ons and upgrades.

How often do we need to upgrade?

The project releases new minor versions a few times a year and supports each for a limited period, so clusters need regular upgrades. Ask any provider how long it supports a version and how upgrades are carried out.

What is a Kubernetes operator?

Software that runs inside the cluster and automates the care of one application, such as a database, by encoding tasks like backup, failover and upgrades.
