Privileged access management (PAM)
Also called PAM.
Definition
Privileged access management controls and monitors accounts with powerful rights, such as administrators and service accounts, by vaulting credentials, granting time-limited access and recording sessions.
Why it matters when you’re buying
Attackers who gain privileged access can do the most damage, so these accounts need the tightest controls. Aim to reduce standing privileges, not only to store passwords more safely.
How it relates to other terms
PAM is the part of IAM for high-risk accounts, and just-in-time access is zero trust applied to administrators.
