Human in the loop
Definition
Human in the loop is a design where a person reviews, approves or corrects an AI system’s output or action at set points before it takes effect.
Why it matters when you’re buying
It is the main safety control for AI that acts on business systems. The design question is where to put the checkpoints: too many and the automation saves nothing, too few and mistakes reach customers or production.
How it relates to other terms
Guardrails catch what rules can describe; human review covers the judgement calls an agent shouldn’t make alone.
