Agentic AI

Definition

Agentic AI describes AI systems designed to pursue goals with some autonomy, planning, acting and checking their own progress, rather than only answering a single prompt.

Why it matters when you’re buying

The term is used loosely in marketing, so ask what a product actually does on its own, which systems it can change and where people stay in control. The more autonomy, the more you need tracing, limits and a way to stop it.

How it relates to other terms

AI agents are the software that does the work. Robotic process automation follows fixed scripts, while agentic systems decide their steps at run time.
