Sovereign cloud and data residency

17 stories in the last 90 days

In short

Sovereign cloud refers to cloud services designed to keep data, operations and legal control within a particular country or region, often with local staff and limits on foreign access; this topic also covers data residency. Buyers in government, critical infrastructure and regulated sectors care because data residency alone may not satisfy rules about who can reach data and under which laws.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between data residency and data sovereignty?

Data residency is where data is stored. Data sovereignty is about which country’s laws govern it and who can be compelled to hand it over. A service can store data locally and still be subject to foreign law through its operator.

Do we need a sovereign cloud?

Only if regulators, contracts or your own risk assessment require control beyond data location, such as local operation, local key management or protection from foreign legal orders. Many organisations meet their needs with in-country regions and customer-managed encryption keys.

What should we ask providers?

Where data and backups are stored, who can access them and from where, who holds the encryption keys, which laws the operator is subject to, and how support and operations staff are vetted.
