Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Also called MCP.
Definition
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data sources through a common interface, so a connector written once can serve many assistants and agents.
Why it matters when you’re buying
MCP cuts the custom integration work behind agents and makes it easier to change AI clients. Each MCP server is also a new route into your systems, so it needs the same authentication, permissions and audit as any API.
How it relates to other terms
Agents use MCP to reach tools, and the content those tools return can carry prompt injection, so treat it as untrusted input.
