Large language model (LLM)
Also called LLM.
Definition
A large language model is an AI model trained on very large amounts of text to predict what comes next, which lets it answer questions, summarise, write and work with code.
Why it matters when you’re buying
Most generative AI products are built on one or more LLMs, so the model behind a product shapes its quality, cost, speed and data handling. Ask which models a vendor uses, where they run and what happens when the vendor switches models.
How it relates to other terms
RAG feeds an LLM your own documents at question time, fine-tuning adapts it to a narrow task, and inference is the act of running it, where most of its cost sits.
