Embeddings

Definition

Embeddings are lists of numbers that represent the meaning of text, images or other data, so that similar items sit close together and can be found by similarity search.

Why it matters when you’re buying

Embeddings power semantic search, recommendations and RAG. The embedding model you pick affects search quality, and changing it later usually means processing all your content again, so choose it deliberately.

How it relates to other terms

Vector databases store and search embeddings, and RAG uses that search to find passages for a model to read.
